What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify common community workers and explain what each person does. They connect each worker with the people they help, the tools they use, or the service they provide.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name several workers from pictures or descriptions. The student can give an accurate example of each worker's job, such as a mail carrier delivering letters.

Common Misconceptions

Students may match workers to uniforms or vehicles without understanding their work. They may also confuse workplaces, such as saying every doctor works in a hospital.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of a farmer, teacher, and firefighter. Ask each student to choose one and complete: “A _____ helps by _____.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students worker picture cards and tool props, then have them match each worker to the tools used on the job.

  2. Ask, “Which community worker would you like to meet, and what would you ask about the job?”

  3. Play worker charades, with students acting out one job while classmates name the worker and explain the work.

  4. Take a short school walk to identify workers, then make a class chart showing how each person helps the school.
