What Students Need to Do
- Students trace Carter’s public service across four stages and connect key actions to each stage. They explain how his work affected Georgia, the nation, and other countries.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match education reform to Carter’s State Senate service, government reorganization and civil rights leadership to his governorship, and Camp David to his presidency. The student also explains his later work through the Carter Center, election monitoring, public health projects, and Habitat for Humanity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the Georgia State Senate with the United States Senate. They may place Camp David in his governor years or claim he founded Habitat for Humanity. Some overlook his major public service after leaving the White House.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-box exit ticket labeled State Senator, Governor, President, and Past President. Ask for one action and one impact in each box.
