What Students Need to Do: Students identify the legal protections juveniles have during court proceedings. They explain how rights such as legal counsel, notice of charges, remaining silent, presenting evidence, and questioning witnesses apply in a case.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can read a juvenile court scenario, name the rights involved, and explain whether each right was protected. They can also explain that juvenile cases generally do not use jury trials.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think juveniles have no rights because they are minors, or that parents can replace an attorney. They may also assume juvenile and adult court procedures are identical, including the right to a jury trial.
How to Assess It: Give students a scenario in which a juvenile is questioned without an attorney and cannot question a witness. Ask them to identify two rights at issue and explain each.

Lesson moves

Give pairs scenario cards to sort into protected right, possible violation, or not guaranteed in juvenile court.
Ask students to write which right they would most want protected during a court hearing and support their choice with a case example.
Play a matching game using cards with juvenile rights, definitions, and short court situations.
Have students annotate a sample juvenile court notice and label where it explains charges, hearings, legal counsel, and response options.
