What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students distinguish unruly behavior from delinquent acts and explain possible consequences. They trace the juvenile court process, explain juveniles' rights, and identify offenses that may be handled in Superior Court.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can sort realistic cases correctly and place each court step in order. They can explain custody rights and why certain serious charges may move a case into Superior Court.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think unruly behavior is a crime for adults or that every juvenile taken into custody stays detained. They may also think juveniles have no legal rights or that a Superior Court case always ends with an adult sentence.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A 15-year-old is accused of shoplifting. Classify the behavior, name two rights, and order intake, detention decision, adjudication, and disposition.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cards labeled custody, intake, release or detention, adjudication, and disposition, then have them arrange and justify the sequence.

  2. Ask students to write whether juvenile courts should focus more on rehabilitation or punishment, using two details from the court process.

  3. Run a scenario sort with cards for unruly behavior, delinquent acts, and offenses that may enter Superior Court.

  4. Use a local juvenile court webpage to identify intake services, probation supports, and where families would go for help.
