What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain that most Georgia judges are chosen by voters in nonpartisan elections. They also identify appointments, including the governor filling vacancies and superior court judges appointing juvenile court judges.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can sort judicial positions by election or appointment. They can explain why a judge may first be appointed, then later face an election.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think all judges are appointed like federal judges, or that judicial candidates run with party labels. They may also confuse temporary vacancy appointments with full terms.

How to Assess It

Give this exit prompt: “How are most Georgia judges selected, and what can happen when a seat becomes vacant?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs judge role cards and selection method cards, then have them match each role to election, governor appointment, or judicial appointment.

  2. Ask students to write whether elections or appointments better protect fair courts, using one Georgia example as evidence.

  3. Play a sorting relay where teams place judge scenarios under nonpartisan election, governor appointment, or superior court appointment.

  4. Show a Georgia sample ballot and have students locate judicial races, note the missing party labels, and explain what voters decide.
