Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify who may register and vote in Georgia elections. They check citizenship, age, county residency, registration, felony sentence status, and any court finding of mental incompetence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can list the qualifications without mixing them up with rules for running for office. Given a short voter profile, they can decide eligibility and explain which requirement applies.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think owning property, paying taxes, or having a driver’s license is required. They may also assume every person with a felony conviction is permanently barred from voting.
How to Assess It: Give students three voter profiles and ask, “Who is eligible to vote in Georgia, and which qualification decides each case?”

Lesson moves

Give groups voter profile cards to sort into eligible, not eligible, or need more information, then require evidence for each choice.
Ask students to write why voter qualifications exist and whether any commonly assumed requirement, such as property ownership, belongs on the list.
Play Qualification Match by pairing cards showing voter details with cards naming citizenship, age, residency, registration, or legal status.
Have students examine Georgia’s voter registration application and highlight where each qualification is checked or confirmed.
