What Students Need to Do: Students trace what happens after a young person is taken into custody. They explain intake, detention decisions, petition filing, adjudication, disposition, and possible appeal in order.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can build an accurate flowchart and explain who makes each decision. They can apply the process to a fictional case and identify possible outcomes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume juveniles receive an adult criminal trial or are always held in detention. They may also confuse adjudication, which determines the facts, with disposition, which sets consequences.
How to Assess It: Give students six process steps in mixed order. Ask them to number the steps and write one sentence explaining the intake officer’s decision.

Lesson moves

Give groups labeled process cards and a fictional case file, then have them arrange the cards and justify each step.
Ask students to write whether detention should be automatic after custody and support their view with two facts about the process.
Run a sequencing relay where teams place intake, petition, adjudication, disposition, and appeal cards in order, then define each term.
Use a local juvenile court website to identify one court role, then connect that role to the correct point in a case flowchart.
