What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students place the main steps of an adult criminal case in order, from arrest through sentencing and possible appeal. They explain what happens at each step and who makes each decision.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can create an accurate flowchart that includes booking, hearings, indictment, arraignment, plea options, trial, verdict, sentencing, and appeal. They can explain that some cases end before trial.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think an arrest proves guilt or that every case goes to a jury trial. They may confuse a grand jury indictment with a guilty verdict or assume the jury chooses the sentence.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Put these in order and explain each in one phrase: arraignment, arrest, sentencing, booking, trial, indictment. Add one way a case may end without trial.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs labeled court process cards to arrange, then have them add arrows showing dismissal, plea agreement, trial, and appeal paths.

  2. Write a response to this prompt: Why does an arrest not mean a person is guilty?

  3. Play a sequencing relay where teams place shuffled criminal process cards in order and justify one disputed placement.

  4. Use a Georgia court news report to identify the current case stage and predict the likely next step.
