What Students Need to Do
- Students compare literacy data with income, life expectancy, health, and access to services across the five countries. They explain likely connections while recognizing that literacy is not the only influence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify patterns and exceptions in a country data table. They support a conclusion with evidence and explain how jobs, government policy, health care, or resources may also shape living conditions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume high literacy automatically makes a country wealthy or that literacy rate measures education quality. They may confuse literacy with school attendance or treat income as the only measure of living conditions.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Country A has 98% literacy and a life expectancy of 83 years. Country B has 76% literacy and 68 years. Explain one likely link and one reason the data do not prove causation.

Give groups data cards for China, India, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea to sort by literacy, income, and life expectancy.
