What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how strong reading and writing skills can improve access to jobs, income, health information, and public services in Australia. They use data to judge the link between literacy and living conditions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a clear claim and support it with literacy, income, employment, health, or education data. They also recognize that literacy is one influence among several, not the only cause of living conditions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume high literacy makes every person wealthy or that literacy means only reading books. They may also treat a data link as proof that literacy alone caused higher income or longer life expectancy.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Australia has 99 percent literacy, high average income, and an 83-year life expectancy. Explain one likely connection and name one other factor affecting living conditions.

Give groups literacy, employment, health, and income cards to arrange into cause-and-effect chains, then compare their chains.
