What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use literacy and quality-of-life data for Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. They explain how reading and writing skills can affect jobs, income, health, and access to services.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can compare the three countries and support a claim with accurate data. The student recognizes that literacy is one influence on living conditions, not the only cause.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse literacy rates with school attendance or graduation rates. They may assume higher literacy automatically creates wealth. They may also treat national averages as true for every person.

How to Assess It

Give students a table showing literacy, income, and life expectancy for the three countries. Ask them to write one claim supported by two data points.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups country data cards for literacy, income, life expectancy, and unemployment, then have them arrange the cards into evidence chains.

  2. Ask students to write: Which country’s literacy data best predicts its living conditions, and what evidence weakens that claim?

  3. Run a matching relay where teams pair literacy statistics with country profiles, then defend each match using one data point.

  4. Examine three job advertisements from the region and list the reading, writing, or training skills each employer expects, then connect them to wages.
