What Students Need to Do
- Students compare literacy data with income, employment, health, and life expectancy data from Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya. They explain how reading and writing skills can affect education and job options without treating literacy as the only cause of living conditions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can read a table or graph and make a clear claim about the relationship between literacy and living conditions. The student supports the claim with evidence from at least two countries and names another factor that may affect the results.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a higher literacy rate automatically makes every person wealthier. They may confuse literacy rates with school attendance or treat income as the only measure of living conditions.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Using the class data table for Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya, write a claim about literacy and living conditions. Support it with two data points and one limitation.
