What Students Need to Do: Students compare Canadian literacy data with measures such as income, employment, health, and access to services. They explain how reading and writing skills can affect workers, families, and the economy.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students make a clear claim about how high literacy supports living conditions in Canada. They cite data and explain the link without claiming that literacy alone determines wealth.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse literacy with years spent in school or the ability to read difficult books. They may assume every literate person is wealthy or that literacy is the only factor shaping living conditions.
How to Assess It: Give students a small table showing Canadian literacy, income, and employment data. Ask, “What relationship do you see, and what is one limit of this evidence?”

Lesson moves

Have pairs arrange literacy, job access, wages, tax revenue, and public services cards into a cause-and-effect chain for Canada.
Ask students to write: “How might strong reading skills change a Canadian worker’s choices and living conditions?”
Play an evidence match game where students pair Canadian literacy facts with likely effects on employment, health, or income.
Examine two Canadian job postings and list the reading and writing tasks each worker must complete to earn wages.
