What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how reading and writing skills can affect employment, income, health, and access to services. They compare data from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Russia to support a conclusion.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can read a literacy data table or graph and connect the figures to measures of living standards. They make a clear claim, cite evidence, and recognize that literacy is not the only influence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a high literacy rate guarantees wealth for every person. They may also confuse literacy rate with school attendance or claim that literacy alone causes differences in living standards.

How to Assess It

Give students a table showing literacy rates and income per person for the three countries. Ask, "What pattern do you see, and what other factor might affect living standards?"

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups country cards with literacy, income, and life expectancy data, then have them arrange cards and explain the pattern they notice.

  2. Ask students to write: "How could limited reading skills affect a person's job choices, health decisions, and income?"

  3. Play a data match game where teams pair literacy figures with likely living-standard indicators, then defend each match.

  4. Have students examine a job application, medicine label, and bank form to identify how literacy affects everyday opportunities and decisions.
