What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how entrepreneurs take risks to start businesses and organize resources. They connect new businesses to jobs, income, competition, new products, and economic growth in Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace how one new business may create jobs, meet customer needs, and support other businesses. They can also explain how limited credit, weak infrastructure, or complex rules can restrict business growth.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think entrepreneurs are only inventors, wealthy people, or owners of large companies. They may assume every new business succeeds or that business growth always benefits everyone equally.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A Kenyan entrepreneur opens a food processing company. Name two ways the company could support economic growth and one barrier it might face.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups cards labeled money, workers, materials, customers, roads, and permits, then have them build a plan for a small African business.
Ask students to write which helps economic growth more, one large employer or many small businesses, and defend their choice.
Play a business challenge game where teams draw country condition cards and decide whether their company expands, changes plans, or closes.
Examine a local shop or service and map how its owner creates jobs, buys supplies, serves customers, and earns income.
