What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain why two people or businesses choose to exchange goods, services, or money. They identify what an African buyer gains and what an African seller gains from a trade.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can analyze a trade example and name a clear benefit for each side. They explain that both sides agree because each expects to be better off after the exchange.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think only sellers benefit because they receive money. They may also assume every trade creates equal gains or that voluntary trade means no rules, costs, or risks.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: “A Kenyan shop buys cocoa from a Ghanaian producer. Name one expected benefit for each side and explain why both agree.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs product, money, and preference cards, then let them trade and record why each accepted the exchange.

  2. Ask students to write whether a Ghanaian cocoa farmer and a local buyer can both benefit from one sale, with evidence.

  3. Play a trade matching game where students pair African sellers with buyers, then earn points for naming both benefits accurately.

  4. Show a grocery label from an African product, then trace how the purchase benefits the shopper, importer, and producer.
