What Students Need to Do: Students tell how tariffs, quotas, and embargoes restrict trade in different ways. They explain how each one can change prices, product supply, and choices for African buyers and sellers.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly identify a trade barrier from a short scenario and explain how it works. They can predict likely effects on consumers, businesses, and government revenue.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think all trade barriers completely stop trade. They may also think foreign governments pay tariffs, or confuse a quota on quantity with a tax on each item.
How to Assess It: Give students three scenarios: a tax on imported shirts, a limit on imported wheat, and a total ban on trade. Have them name each barrier and predict one effect.

Lesson moves

Run a token market twice, then add a tariff card, quota cup, or embargo sign and record changes in price and sales.
Ask: Which barrier would most affect a Kenyan shop importing rice, and how would buyers, sellers, and government each respond?
Play barrier sort: teams match scenario cards to tariff, quota, embargo, then earn a point for explaining the effect.
Give students a current African trade news article and have them identify the restriction, affected product, and likely winners and losers.
