What Students Need to Do: Students identify tariffs as import taxes, quotas as limits on quantity, and embargoes as bans on some or all trade. They compare how each barrier affects prices, product supply, buyers, domestic producers, and foreign sellers.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a trade scenario from Southern or Eastern Asia, a student correctly names the barrier and explains how it differs from the other two. The student predicts likely effects on price, availability, consumers, and sellers.
Common Misconceptions: Students often treat all trade barriers as complete bans. They may confuse a tariff with a quota or assume a barrier affects every buyer and seller in the same way. They may also overlook the different effects on domestic producers and foreign sellers.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: A country taxes imported rice, limits imported cars to 10,000, and stops trade with another country. Label each barrier and predict one effect of each.

Lesson moves

Run a token market for rice, then add a tariff, quota, and embargo in separate rounds and record price and quantity changes.
Ask students which barrier would most affect a store importing phones from South Korea, then have them defend their answer in writing.
Give pairs scenario cards to sort as tariff, quota, embargo, or no barrier, then require one reason for each placement.
Compare two short news reports about Asian trade restrictions, then identify the barrier, target product, buyer effects, and seller effects.
