What Students Need to Do: Students distinguish taxes on imports, limits on import amounts, and bans on trade. They compare how each restriction changes prices, supply, consumer choice, and seller competition.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a trade scenario, students can name the restriction and explain its likely effects on buyers and sellers. They can also state one similarity and one difference among the three restrictions.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse a tariff with a quota or assume both completely stop trade. They may also think an embargo applies to every country and every product, rather than a named country or good.
How to Assess It: Give students three scenarios: a $5 import fee, a limit of 10,000 imported cars, and a ban on oil purchases. Have them label each restriction and predict one effect.

Lesson moves

Run a market with product cards, then add a tax card, a quantity limit, and a trade ban; students record price and supply changes.
Ask students: Which restriction most reduces consumer choice, and why? Require evidence from one buyer and one seller.
Play Barrier Sort: teams classify scenario cards as tariffs, quotas, or embargoes, then earn a point for explaining each choice.
Inspect classroom product labels, choose one imported item, and predict how each restriction would affect its price, supply, and availability.
