What Students Need to Do: Students explain why countries focus on goods they can produce efficiently. They connect that focus to surplus goods, exchange, and access to products made elsewhere.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can use a resource or production chart to predict what two African countries might exchange. They can explain how both countries gain from the exchange.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think specialization means a country produces only one good. They may assume trade helps only the seller. Some think countries trade only because they lack resources.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “Ghana produces extra cocoa, while Kenya produces extra tea. Explain why they might trade and how each benefits.”

Lesson moves

Give groups African country cards, product cards, and tokens, then have them produce and exchange goods through three timed trading rounds.
Ask students to write: “Why might producing more of one good lead a country to trade with another country?”
Play a matching game where students pair African countries with specialized products, then choose useful trading partners and explain each match.
Have students inspect product labels from coffee, chocolate, or fruit, locate the African source countries, and discuss why those goods are exported.
