What Students Need to Do: Students identify products that particular countries can make efficiently because of resources, workers, technology, or skills. They explain why countries sell those products abroad and buy items that others make more efficiently.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a simple production table, a student identifies what each country should produce and predicts what it would import. The explanation connects efficient production to greater output, trade, and more choices for both countries.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think specialization means a country makes only one product, or that imports show weakness. They may also assume every trade deal benefits both sides equally.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Country A makes 12 shirts or 4 phones, while Country B makes 6 shirts or 8 phones. What should each produce, and why would they trade?

Lesson moves

Run a two-country production simulation with rice and electronics cards, then let groups trade to meet both needs.
Ask students to write: Why might Japan trade cars for food rather than produce everything itself?
Play a matching relay where teams pair Asian countries with resources, specialized products, likely exports, and likely imports.
Have students inspect five product labels at home, record the countries of origin, and explain why those products may be made there.
