What Students Need to Do: Students identify goods Canada can produce efficiently, such as wheat, lumber, or oil. They explain how focusing on those goods creates reasons to exchange products with other countries.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can use a Canadian product to explain why one country sells and another country buys. They connect focused production to greater output, lower costs, or access to goods not produced locally.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think countries trade only because they cannot make a product. They may assume specialization means producing just one good. They may also confuse imports with exports.
How to Assess It: Ask: “Canada produces large amounts of wheat but imports bananas. How does each country’s production focus make this trade useful to both?”

Lesson moves

Give teams resource cards and country mats, then have them choose one product to make and trade for two missing products.
Ask, “Why might Canada sell wheat abroad and buy bananas?” Students write three sentences, then compare answers with a partner.
Play a trade-chain card game where students match Canadian exports to imports and state why each country chose to specialize.
Check labels on five classroom products, map their origins, and identify one item Canada might import because another country produces it efficiently.
