Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students trace an exchange from each side, identifying what the buyer gains and what the seller gains. They use regional examples such as oil, dates, wheat, textiles, and fertilizers.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can explain why both sides agree to a trade, even when their gains differ. They support their explanation with a clear example involving a Southwest Asian country.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think only the seller benefits because the seller receives money. They may assume voluntary means free, or that every trade benefits both sides equally. They may also confuse imports with exports.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Turkey sells textiles to Jordan. Name one likely benefit for Turkey and one for Jordan, then explain why both agreed.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs country cards, commodity cards, and play money; let them negotiate trades, then record each buyer’s and seller’s gain.
Ask, “Why might Jordan import wheat while exporting fertilizers?” Students write four sentences explaining the gain on both sides of each exchange.
Play Trade Match: students pair Southwest Asian export cards with buyer-need cards and earn a point only after naming both gains.
Examine labels on dates, clothing, or fuel-source maps, then identify who bought, who sold, and what each side received.
