What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how voters help select national leaders in each country. They distinguish South Africa’s indirect presidential selection through Parliament from direct presidential elections in Nigeria and Kenya.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can draw accurate voter-to-leader diagrams for all three countries. They explain that South Africans elect lawmakers who choose the president, while Nigerians and Kenyans vote directly for president and legislators.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think South Africans directly elect their president. They may assume citizens in a parliamentary democracy do not vote, or that presidents in Nigeria and Kenya choose the legislature.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket that asks: “How does a citizen’s vote help choose the president in South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya?” Require one sentence per country.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups voter, parliament, and president cards, then have them model each country’s election process with arrows and paper ballots.
Ask students to write: “Which system gives voters a more direct role in choosing the president, and why?”
Read election scenario cards aloud, and have teams hold up South Africa, Nigeria, or Kenya cards to identify the country.
Show sample election diagrams from the three countries, then have students label where citizens, lawmakers, and presidents enter the process.
