What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how citizens help choose national leaders in China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and India. They compare direct elections, legislative selection, limited-choice voting, and no meaningful electoral choice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify who citizens elect and how each national leader gains office. They use specific evidence to compare citizen influence across the five countries.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every country that holds elections gives voters a real choice. They may also confuse directly electing a president with electing legislators who then select a prime minister.
How to Assess It
- Give students five country names and ask them to write who citizens elect and how the national leader is chosen in each country.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Have pairs place five country cards on a citizen participation continuum, then attach leader-selection cards beneath each country.
Ask students to explain which country gives citizens the most direct role in choosing the national leader and cite two comparisons.
Play a card-matching game using countries, government types, elected bodies, national leaders, and levels of voter choice.
Give students a voter turnout table for the five countries and discuss why turnout alone does not prove meaningful citizen participation.
