What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how citizens help choose national leaders in Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. They distinguish direct elections, indirect selection through parliament, and hereditary rule.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain that Israelis elect parliament, whose coalition supports a prime minister. Saudi citizens do not elect the king, while Turkish citizens directly elect the president and parliament.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Israeli voters directly elect the prime minister. They may assume Saudi citizens vote for the king. They may also confuse Turkey’s current presidential system with its former parliamentary system.
How to Assess It
- Give students three boxes labeled Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Ask them to write who citizens elect and how the national leader takes office in each country.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups country cards and election-step strips, then have them build three leader-selection flowcharts and explain who citizens choose.
Ask students, “Where do citizens have the most direct role in choosing national leaders, and what evidence supports your ranking?”
Run a card sort with facts such as “citizens directly elect the president” and “citizens elect parliament,” allowing cards to match multiple countries.
Give students election and royal succession headlines, then have them label the citizen role shown in each event.
