What Students Need to Do: Students explain that Canadian voters elect a member of Parliament from their local riding. The party that can command the most support in Parliament usually forms the government, and its leader becomes prime minister.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can trace the process from local ballots to parliamentary seats to the choice of prime minister. The student clearly distinguishes direct election of members from indirect selection of the national leader.
Common Misconceptions: Students often think Canadians vote directly for prime minister. They may assume the party with the most total votes always governs, instead of looking at parliamentary seats and support. Some think the monarch chooses the leader without regard to election results.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: “Explain in three steps how a Canadian voter helps choose the prime minister.” Require the terms riding, Parliament, and party leader.

Lesson moves

Give students candidate cards and ballots; they elect riding representatives, total party seats, then identify which party leader becomes prime minister.
Ask students to write: Why do Canadian voters choose a member of Parliament rather than vote directly for prime minister?
Run a seat-count race where teams match election result cards to the party most likely to form the government.
Compare a Canadian election news graphic with a class election, showing how local votes determine seats and seats help determine the national leader.
