What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find Canada on a world map and a North America map. They then identify Quebec within Canada using borders, nearby provinces, and major waterways.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given unlabeled maps, students correctly mark Canada and shade Quebec within it. They can explain that Quebec is a province in eastern Canada, not a separate country.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse Quebec with Quebec City or treat Quebec as an independent country. They may shade all of Canada or mistakenly choose Ontario.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unlabeled world map and an unlabeled Canada map. Ask them to circle Canada, shade Quebec, and label each.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs laminated maps and sticky notes, then have them mark Canada on the world map and Quebec on the regional map.
Ask students to write two clues that would help a classmate find Quebec without naming it.
Run a map relay where teams race to point to Canada, Quebec, Ontario, and the United States in random order.
Show a Montreal weather report, then have students locate Montreal within Quebec and Quebec within Canada.
