What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate Canada's major water bodies and land regions on both world and regional maps. They distinguish rivers, bays, lakes, oceans, mountain ranges, and broad land regions, then describe where each lies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given blank world and regional maps, a student places and labels all seven features in the correct areas. The student uses compass directions and nearby borders or coasts to explain each location.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the Great Lakes as one lake or place all of them fully inside Canada. They may confuse Hudson Bay with the St. Lawrence River, reverse the oceans, or draw the Canadian Shield as a narrow mountain chain.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a blank regional map of Canada and a seven-item word bank. Ask them to place each label and describe the Canadian Shield's location.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank Canada map and seven label cards. Students place them, check an atlas, then glue each card in place.
Ask students to write three location clues using compass directions, then trade clues for a partner to solve.
Run a map relay where teams place one feature label at a time on an unlabeled wall map, then correct errors together.
Trace a freight route from Vancouver to Montréal, and discuss how mountains, lakes, and ocean access affect the route.
