What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use maps and data to explain why most Australians live near the coast, especially in the east, southeast, and southwest. They connect ports, nearby Asian markets, climate, water, and mineral deposits to settlement and trade patterns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain why the dry interior has few large cities while temperate coastal areas have dense populations. They can also trace resources such as iron ore or coal from inland mines to ports and overseas buyers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all of Australia is desert or that natural resources always attract large cities. They may overlook how water, jobs, ports, and distance from markets shape settlement and trade.
How to Assess It
- Give students maps of climate, population, resources, and ports. Ask them to explain one population pattern and one trade pattern using evidence from at least two maps.
