What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use maps and data to explain why trade routes, major industries, and settlement patterns differ among the three countries. They connect geographic features to specific outcomes using evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain how ports, rivers, climate, energy resources, and distance shape trade and settlement in each country. The student can make an accurate comparison supported by map evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume natural resources always attract large populations, overlooking harsh climate and long distances in Russia. They may also think the United Kingdom's island location limits trade, rather than supporting trade through ports.

How to Assess It

Give students a map of the three countries. Ask them to write one location, climate, or resource factor for each country and explain its effect on trade or settlement.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs outline maps, climate keys, resource cards, and population dots, then have them build and annotate one map for each country.

  2. Ask: Why is western Russia more crowded than Siberia, despite Siberia's resources? Students cite two map clues in writing.

  3. Play Country Clue Match: teams match location, climate, resource, trade, and population cards, then defend each set.

  4. Trace shipments of Russian gas, a German car, and British medicine, marking routes and geographic advantages on a map.
