What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, and Italy using physical, climate, resource, trade, and population maps. They use map evidence to explain trade patterns and why people cluster in some areas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can link island access to British sea trade, German rivers to inland trade, Italy’s climate to farming, and Russian resources to exports. They can explain a dense and a sparse population area using evidence from at least two maps.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume Europe has one climate or an even population spread. They may think all of Russia is frozen and empty. They may also assume resources create trade without ports, rivers, roads, workers, or markets.
How to Assess It
- Give students climate, resource, transport, and population maps for Germany and Russia. Ask them to explain one trade difference and one population difference using evidence from two maps.

Ways to Teach It
Layer tracing-paper maps of climate, resources, rivers, and population for four countries, then circle places where two patterns overlap.
Write a claim explaining why western Russia is more densely settled than northern Russia, using climate and transportation evidence.
Play a four-country card sort matching each trade or settlement pattern to evidence about location, climate, resources, or transport.
Act as a shipping company and choose a port in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, or Russia, defending the choice with map evidence.
