What Students Need to Do: Students use maps and data to explain why most Australians live near the eastern and southeastern coasts. They connect climate, water, natural resources, and distance from other countries to settlement and economic activity.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can make a clear claim about where Australians live and support it with map evidence. They can explain how dry interior conditions, coastal climates, mineral deposits, and access to ports shape jobs and settlement.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Australia is entirely desert or that people are spread evenly across the continent. They may also assume natural resources always attract large cities, overlooking water, climate, transportation, and remote mining operations.
How to Assess It: Give students a map showing rainfall, major cities, and mineral deposits. Ask: Why is Australia’s population concentrated near the coast, and what evidence supports your answer?

Lesson moves
