What Students Need to Do
- Students identify major mountains, deserts, rivers, and seas on regional maps. They explain how each feature opens or blocks trade routes and encourages or limits settlement.

- A student can compare physical, population, and trade maps to explain visible patterns. They can support claims using examples such as the Himalayas, Gobi Desert, Yangtze River, and coastal ports.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume mountains and deserts are completely empty or that all waterways support trade equally. They may also confuse physical barriers with political borders or overlook rivers as settlement corridors.
How to Assess It
- Give students paired physical and population maps. Ask them to choose one land feature and one water feature, then explain each feature's effect on trade and settlement.
