What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each region’s rainfall, temperature, vegetation, water, and terrain to settlement patterns and trade routes. They explain why people cluster in some places and avoid others.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare all four regions and use map evidence to explain dense or sparse settlement. The student can predict how regional conditions shape travel routes, transportation, and traded goods.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the Sahara and Sahel as the same region. They may assume rain forests support dense settlement everywhere or describe climate without linking it to trade and population.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Choose one region and explain how two physical characteristics affect both settlement and trade. Require one specific example for each effect.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs four region mats and cards for rainfall, vegetation, population, transport, and goods, then have students sort and justify each match.
Ask students to write: Which region creates the greatest challenges for trade, and what evidence supports your answer?
Play a region clue game where teams identify the region, predict population density, and name a likely trade challenge.
Trace cocoa from a West African rain forest farm to a port, then mark how roads, rainfall, and settlement affect its route.
