What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read physical, climate, resource, population, and trade maps for Mexico, Brazil, and Cuba. They explain why settlement and trade concentrate in particular areas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can make accurate cause-and-effect claims for all three countries and support each claim with map evidence. The student separates settlement factors from trade factors and identifies factors that affect both.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat all three countries as having the same tropical climate. They often assume people settle beside every resource, even in the Amazon or arid northern Mexico. They may name an export without connecting it to transportation routes or ports.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one country and explain one factor shaping settlement and one factor shaping trade, using two specific facts from a map.

Layer climate, resource, and population maps on transparencies, then circle two places where the patterns overlap and annotate why.
Ask: Why is Brazil’s coast more densely settled than the Amazon? Students write a claim using two mapped facts.
