What Students Need to Do: Students explain how resources such as timber, oil, minerals, fish, and fresh water support Canadian industries. They connect resource location and availability to jobs, trade, and economic growth.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can use a Canadian resource map to explain why certain industries develop in specific regions. They can also describe benefits of resource exports and risks such as price changes, depletion, and environmental damage.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think natural resources create wealth without workers, tools, transportation, or investment. They may also confuse a raw resource, such as timber, with a finished product, such as furniture.
How to Assess It: Give students a Canadian resource map and ask: “Choose one resource and explain two ways it affects Canada’s economy.” Require one industry and one job or export example.

Lesson moves

Give pairs Canadian resource cards to place on a blank map, then add matching industry, job, and export labels.
Ask students to write whether Canada should rely heavily on oil exports, using one benefit and one risk as evidence.
Play a matching relay where teams connect Canadian resources with regions, industries, products, and jobs.
Have students inspect product labels at home, then trace one wood, mineral, or energy product back to a Canadian resource industry.
