What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify major Australian resources such as iron ore, coal, natural gas, gold, and farmland. They explain how these resources affect production, trade, jobs, and government revenue.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use one Australian example to connect extraction with jobs, exports, business income, and tax revenue. The student can explain how falling prices, limited supply, or overreliance can reduce these benefits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think natural resources include only mined materials, leaving out land, water, forests, and energy sources. They may assume large supplies automatically make every citizen wealthier. They may overlook processing, transport, world prices, and environmental costs.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Australia discovers a large new lithium deposit. In three sentences, explain two ways it could affect jobs, trade, or government revenue.
