What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain why a buyer and a seller both choose to make a trade. They give Canadian examples showing buyers gaining goods, choice, or lower prices, while sellers gain income and customers.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can examine a trade scenario and name a specific benefit for each side. The student can explain that both sides agree because each expects to gain something.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think only the seller benefits because the seller receives money. They may also assume voluntary trade means both sides receive equal benefits or face no costs.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “A Canadian shop sells maple syrup to a customer for $12. Why did each side agree to the trade?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs buyer cards, seller cards, play money, and Canadian product cards, then have them negotiate three trades and record each side’s benefit.

  2. Ask students to write: “Why might a Canadian shopper and a shoe store both feel satisfied after the same purchase?”

  3. Play a benefit sort using trade cards, with students labeling each outcome as a buyer benefit, seller benefit, or both.

  4. Compare two Canadian grocery advertisements, then identify how lower prices help shoppers and increased sales help stores.
