What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify major land and water features on a physical map of the United States. They use map labels, colors, symbols, and directions to describe where each feature is located.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can point to named rivers, mountain ranges, plains, deserts, and bodies of water on a physical map. They can describe each location using regions or cardinal directions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse physical maps with political maps or treat state borders as landforms. They may also mistake map colors for state boundaries instead of elevation or terrain.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank United States map and ask them to label one river, one mountain range, and one other physical feature. Have them describe one feature's location.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a relief map with clay for mountains, yarn for rivers, and sandpaper for deserts, then label each feature.

  2. Show a physical map and ask, "How could you describe the location of the Rocky Mountains without pointing?"

  3. Play map relay by giving teams feature cards to place on a large blank United States map.

  4. Plan a pretend road trip and identify the rivers, mountains, plains, or deserts travelers would cross.
