What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find and label the Appalachian Mountains and Rocky Mountains on a physical map of the United States. They use map colors, landform symbols, and nearby regions to explain where each range is.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student correctly points to and labels both ranges on an unlabeled United States map. The student explains that the Appalachians are in the East and the Rockies are in the West.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse east and west or place both ranges near the same coast. They may also mark one mountain instead of showing that each range covers a large area.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank United States outline map. Ask them to shade and label both ranges, then write East or West beside each label.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a relief map with modeling clay, placing one raised range in the eastern United States and one in the West, then label both.

  2. Compare two physical maps and write: How can color, shading, and location help you tell the Appalachians from the Rockies?

  3. Play Map Relay: teams take turns placing Appalachian or Rocky Mountain cards in the correct area on a large floor map.

  4. Plan an imaginary trip across the country, choosing which mountain range you would cross on an eastern route and a western route.
