What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate the Grand Canyon, Salton Sea, Great Salt Lake, and Mojave Desert on a U.S. map. They also locate the Chisholm Trail, Pittsburgh, Kitty Hawk, Pearl Harbor, Montgomery, and Chicago.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can place all ten names in the correct areas on an unlabeled map. The student can describe each location using a state, coast, region, or nearby place.

Common Misconceptions

Students may switch the Great Salt Lake and Salton Sea or treat the Grand Canyon and Mojave Desert as states. They may mark the Chisholm Trail as one point, place Pearl Harbor on the mainland, or put Kitty Hawk inland.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank U.S. map with state outlines. Ask them to mark the Great Salt Lake, Mojave Desert, Chisholm Trail, Chicago, Kitty Hawk, and Pearl Harbor.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a laminated U.S. map and location cards, then have them place each card and check their work with an atlas.

  2. Ask students to write which two locations are easiest to confuse and name one map clue that separates them.

  3. Play a map relay where teams draw a location card, point to it, and name its state or region.

  4. Plan a route connecting Chicago, Montgomery, Kitty Hawk, and Pearl Harbor, then choose the transportation needed for each part.
