What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify six named places on U.S. and northeastern regional maps. They use state borders, coastlines, lakes, and nearby cities to explain each location.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, Gettysburg, and the Erie Canal on a blank map. They can name each place’s state or district.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Washington, D.C., as a state or place Gettysburg near Philadelphia. They may mark the Erie Canal as one point instead of tracing it across New York.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank northeastern U.S. map. Ask them to label the five places with dots and draw the Erie Canal as a line.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs blank northeastern maps, labeled sticky dots, and blue yarn to place five locations and trace the Erie Canal.
Ask students to write two location clues for one place using its state, nearby water, or direction from another city.
Play a map relay where teams place one location card at a time on a large outline map.
Plan a trip from Boston to Washington, D.C., stopping in New York City and Philadelphia, then list the travel direction between stops.
