What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find and label the Savannah, Flint, and Chattahoochee Rivers on a physical map of Georgia. They use direction, borders, and nearby land features to tell the rivers apart.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student correctly points to and names all three rivers on an unlabeled physical map. The student identifies the Savannah in the east, the Chattahoochee in the west, and the Flint in the southwest.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the Savannah River with the city of Savannah. They may switch the Savannah and Chattahoochee Rivers or assume every river forms a state border.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank physical map of Georgia and a three-name word bank. Ask them to draw a line to and label each river.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a laminated Georgia map and blue yarn to trace each river, then add name labels beside the yarn.

  2. Ask students to write how east, west, and southwest help them remember where each river is located.

  3. Play River Relay, where teams race to place Savannah, Flint, and Chattahoochee labels correctly on a large floor map.

  4. Use a Georgia road map to find one city near each river, then mark each city and river on a class map.
