What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find Georgia’s five geographic regions on a state map. They use direction words such as north, south, center, and northwest to describe each location. They compare the regions by position, size, and land surface.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label all five regions on a blank Georgia map. They describe where each region is located and compare two regions using map evidence. They can explain which regions share borders.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a region with a city or county. They may place the Blue Ridge across all of northern Georgia or think the Coastal Plain is only along the ocean. They may also mix up the three regions in northwest Georgia.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank Georgia map and ask them to label the five regions. Then have them write one sentence comparing the locations of two regions.

Cut apart a color-coded Georgia region puzzle, then have students assemble it, label each piece, and add a north arrow.
Ask students to write: How are the locations of the Piedmont and Coastal Plain alike and different?
