What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find Georgia’s five geographic regions on a map. They compare each region’s elevation and land shape. They describe mountains, ridges, valleys, rolling hills, and flat plains.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly place the Appalachian Plateau, Ridge and Valley, Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain. They explain clear differences between at least two regions using landform words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may place every mountainous region along the same northern border. They may confuse the Piedmont’s rolling hills with mountains. They may think the Coastal Plain is entirely beach.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank Georgia map and the five region names. Ask them to label each region and write one difference between two regions.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs modeling clay and a Georgia outline to build and label raised mountains, ridges, rolling hills, and flat plains.

  2. Ask students to write how the land would change during a trip from the Blue Ridge to the Coastal Plain.

  3. Read region clue cards aloud, then have teams place each card on the correct part of a large Georgia map.

  4. Plan a route from Dalton to Savannah using a Georgia map, and describe the land travelers would see along the way.
