What Students Need to Do: Students locate Georgia’s five regions on a map and compare their weather, land use, farms, and major industries. They connect each region’s physical features to how people make a living there.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can label all five regions on an unlabeled map. They can use specific examples, such as Blue Ridge apples or Coastal Plain peanuts, to explain regional differences.
Common Misconceptions: Students often mix up the Blue Ridge and Ridge and Valley regions. They may think the Coastal Plain is only the coastline or that climate is the same statewide. Some treat agriculture as the only economic contribution.
How to Assess It: Give students an unlabeled Georgia map and have them label all five regions. Ask them to compare two regions by climate, agriculture, and one other economic contribution.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a Georgia map and region cards, then have them match cards for climate, crops, landforms, and industries to each region.
Ask students to write which Georgia region would best support an apple orchard, peanut farm, or carpet factory, using two facts.
Play region clue bingo using clues such as highest elevations, carpet production, major cities, peanuts, or limestone caves.
Have students choose a Georgia business and recommend the best region for it based on climate, resources, workers, and transportation.
