What Students Need to Do: Students use maps at different scales to identify Georgia as part of the southeastern United States and North America. They place Georgia in the Northern and Western Hemispheres.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given state, national, continental, and world maps, students can mark Georgia accurately on each one. They can explain how each larger area contains the smaller one.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the state of Georgia with the country of Georgia. They may think southeastern means Southern Hemisphere or that the eastern United States lies in the Eastern Hemisphere.
How to Assess It: Give students four small maps showing the Southeast, United States, North America, and the world. Ask them to circle Georgia and label its country, continent, and hemispheres.

Lesson moves

Give pairs four nested map cutouts and have them place Georgia inside the Southeast, United States, North America, and both hemispheres.
Ask students to explain why Georgia is in the Western Hemisphere even though it is in the eastern United States.
