What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read a visual source and a written source about the same topic. They connect details from both sources to form a clear conclusion.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately explain how a map, graph, photograph, or video adds to a written text. They cite specific evidence from both sources and notice agreements or conflicts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat visuals as decoration or repeat only the title and labels. They may describe each source separately without explaining how the information connects.

How to Assess It

Give students a climate map and a short paragraph about settlement in Europe. Ask them to write one conclusion supported by a detail from each source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed map, a short article, and sticky notes, then have them match three map details to related sentences.

  2. Ask, “What does the photograph show that the caption leaves out?” Students write two details and discuss how each changes their understanding.

  3. Run a source-match relay where teams pair graph cards with text cards and explain each match before earning a point.

  4. Compare a city transit map with an online event page, then plan a route and cite details from both sources.
