What Students Need to Do: Students read grade-level history and social studies texts without step-by-step teacher support. They identify the main idea, explain key details, and use context to understand unfamiliar terms.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a new textbook excerpt or primary source, a student can summarize it accurately and answer questions with evidence. The student notices confusion and rereads independently.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy one sentence instead of summarizing the whole text. They may skip headings, captions, source information, or unfamiliar words that affect meaning.
How to Assess It: Give students a 250-word social studies passage. Ask: “What is the main idea, and which two details best support it?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs a passage cut into paragraph strips, then have them rebuild its order using headings, dates, and transition words.
After reading a short historical account, ask students to write which detail mattered most and defend their choice with evidence.
Run an evidence hunt where teams match question cards to supporting sentences in a textbook section.
Compare a museum exhibit label with a textbook paragraph about the same event, then identify what each source helps readers understand.
